About Lug Butterfly Valve:
A lug butterfly valve is a type of valve designed to regulate the flow of fluids through a pipe by using a rotating disc. Unlike wafer butterfly valves, lug butterfly valves have threaded inserts, or “lugs,” on the valve body that allow for bolts to pass through and secure the valve between two pipe flanges. This design provides additional strength and stability, making valves suitable for applications requiring frequent maintenance and where system sections need to be isolated without shutting down the entire system.

These valve’s construction consists of a few essential parts. Usually constructed of ductile iron, stainless steel, or cast iron, the valve body has threaded lugs all the way around it. These lugs make it possible to bolt the valve straight to the pipe ends’ flanges, creating a strong and solid connection. The central disc is positioned inside the valve body on a shaft, also known as a stem, that runs through the center of the valve. Stainless steel and other strong materials are frequently used to make discs, guaranteeing their lifespan and ability to withstand corrosion. Within the valve body are seals or seats that are often composed of elastomers such as PTFE or EPDM to guarantee a tight seal while the disc is in the closed position.

Operating Mechanism:
A lug butterfly valve’s operating mechanism is simple but efficient. The disc inside the valve body rotates due to the shaft’s movement when the actuator or handle is turned. When the disc is fully open, it lines up with the fluid’s flow to allow for maximum flow with the least amount of resistance.

The disc is turned till it is perpendicular to the fluid flow when the valve has to be closed, so stopping the flow. Leakage is avoided thanks to the tight seal that the elastomeric seats provide against the disc. Because of its rapid operation, this design can be fully opened and closed in about 90 degrees, or about a quarter turn. The benefit of the lug design is that it allows one side of the pipeline to be detached without compromising the other side, making it ideal for systems that require frequent maintenance or where sections of the pipeline need to be isolated.
